The Institute for Studies of Eastern Christianity (ISEC) at Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York was established in 2017. In continuance with the goals of the former Sophia Institute, ISEC provides a scholarly forum to explore the theology and tradition of the Orthodox Church with emphasis on the application of this rich lineage, both patristic and modern, to contemporary social issues.

Our activities: 

  • Foster education in the area of Eastern Christian Studies

  • Bring together emerging and advanced scholars to facilitate research and collaboration on pressing contemporary issues affecting the world

  • Raise awareness of Eastern Christian theology and liturgical practices among scholars and the general public

  • Actively engage in dialogue with other Christian and Non-Christian traditions 

  • Organize and host an annual international academic conferences built around a single theme

  • Publish proceedings from the annual conference

  • Organize and host year-round smaller gatherings on relevant themes
